CMS Opens Hardship Exception for New Participants Transitioning to MIPS 2017

Eligible professionals (EPs) who have never attested to the EHR Incentive Program, but intend to demonstrate meaningful use (prior to 10/1/17) and MIPS in program year 2017, may be eligible for a one-time significant hardship exception per the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS).

MIPS Hardship Exceptions At-a-Glance

EPs who are eligible for this hardship exception will avoid the 2018 payment adjustment and will only need to demonstrate MIPS (Merit-Based Incentive Payment System) for 2017. You must apply by 10/1/17.

EPs who are new participants to the EHR Incentive Program in 2017, can successfully demonstrate meaningful use for a reporting period of any 90 consecutive days, ending no later than 9/30/17, and attest early by 10/1/17 to avoid the payment adjustment in 2018.

CMS will now allow these EPs who also intend to participate in MIPS in performance year 2017 to apply for a significant hardship exception from the 2018 payment adjustment, without demonstrating meaningful use in 2017.

Only EPs who have not successfully demonstrated meaningful use in a prior year, intend to attest to meaningful use for an EHR reporting period in 2017 by 10/1/17 to avoid the 2018 payment adjustment, and intend to transition to MIPS and report on measures specified for the Advancing Care Information (ACI) performance category under MIPS in 2017, will qualify for the hardship.

Applying for the MIPS Hardship Exception
