Meaningful Use: How to Document Your Attestation and Prepare for an Audit

In the past few months, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have been increasing the number of meaningful use audits for providers who received EHR incentives, to ensure providers met requirements. CMS will conduct two types of meaningful use audits: post-payment and pre-payment.

How to Prepare for a Meaningful Use Audit

To help you prepare attestation documentation in case of a meaningful use audit, read our meaningful use attestation audit guide for audits that are prior to reporting year 2017. This guide provides important information, a sample exclusion letter and industry resources that can assist you with a meaningful use audit.

Important: Providers must retain all documentation to support attestation data for meaningful use and Clinical Quality Measures (CQMs) for six years post-attestation. This is the sole responsibility of the provider to retain documentation in their records.
