Loren Azevedo, OD: “The past five years have been revolutionary for our office, “said Dr. Loren Azevedo. “In 2004, we had five doctors with an annual AGS of $1.8 million. At the annual October 2009 AHIMA Conference, Dr. Mark Leavitt, Chair of the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology (CCHIT) warned that those doctors who wait until 2010 to implement EMR/EHR will face a “high risk” of failing to achieve “meaningful use” of health IT in time for the 2011-2012 federal

| incentives. In addition, he reported that “achieving meaningful use of an EMR system will take at least 18 months, if not two years.” As an early adopter of EMR, it will be much easier for doctors to capitalize on maximum Medicare (up to $44,000) and Medicaid (up to $63,500) incentive dollars available through the ARRA/HITECH Act — 70% of the funding comes in the first two years. |

| MaximEyes Software Will Comply with Government Defined Standards |
The Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) is expected to adopt an initial set of standards, implementation specifications, and certification criteria by 12/31/09. Government defined standards for EMR certification and meaningful use measures will be finalized by spring 2010 after a public comment period. Once HHS releases the final criteria, First Insight will immediately begin the process of complying with the new EMR government certification standards for meaningful use. Moreover, First Insight is a member of the CCHIT Eye Care Work Group and once CCHIT releases eye care specialty criteria in 2010, First Insight will ensure that MaximEyes software becomes CCHIT certified.

Save Thousands of Dollars with Section 179 |
The IRS Tax Code Section 179 allows small and medium-sized businesses (sole proprietor, partnership or corporation) to expense (deduct from taxable income) a maximum of $250,000 on qualifying property that businesses purchase or lease and place in service by 12/31/09. In addition, Section 179 includes a one-time 50% “bonus depreciation” on equipment that exceeds the $250,000 deduction limit.
Qualifying practices can take advantage of huge tax savings when purchasing or leasing practice management/EMR software and IT equipment before the end of the year. IT equipment, such as servers, computers, printers, scanners, routers, and fax machines qualify for the Section 179 deduction, along with ophthalmic diagnostic equipment and furniture.
If you decide to take the Section 179 deduction, you will need to complete Part 1 of the IRS form 4562 and attach it to your tax return. However, before you make any software or equipment purchases, consult your accountant or tax professional for advice. |
