Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Announces the Release of 2008 Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI) Measure Specifications
On November 15, 2007, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced the release of the 2008 Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI). The 2008 PQRI Measure Specifications (Version 1.0) are posted on the CMS website at http://www.cms.hhs.gov/PQRI/; click on the “2008 PQRI Information” link located in the left column.

2008 Eye Care Measure Specifications:
There are 119 Quality Measures that make up the 2008 PQRI; four are specific to eye care. For the 2008 PQRI, CMS will carry over four of the eight measures from 2007. CMS will retire Measures 13, 15, 16 and 17 as of January 1, 2008.
 
The following Measures will be part of PQRI 2008:
  Measure 12: Primary Open Angle Glaucoma: Optic Nerve Evaluation
  Measure 14: Age-Related Macular Degeneration: Dilated Macular Examination
  Measure 18: Diabetic Retinopathy: Documentation of Presence or Absence of Macular Edema and Level of Severity of Retinopathy
  Measure 19: Diabetic Retinopathy: Communication with the Physician Managing Ongoing Diabetes Care
